As of January 1, 2024, drivers under the age of 18 will need to complete an in-person road test to obtain their Probationary license. Appointments for a road test can be scheduled 11 weeks in advance at wisconsindmv.gov/roadtest. Student drivers ages 16 and 17 who have completed their required driver education course, behind the wheel training, and 50 hours of supervised driving may still apply for the road test waiver through December 31, 2023.
We anticipate questions about road test availability and can share that we’ll be offering tests consistent with the availability pre-COVID. Additionally, we anticipate questions from students and families about “exceptions” or allowing individuals to have their test waived after the pilot ends. We can state confidently that tests will be required starting January 1st, no exceptions.
